iTero Technology for Your Orthodontic Care

iTero machine closeup with white background

One of the biggest hassles of orthodontic care has always been the impressions. A big wad of goopy substance shoved into your mouth can be highly unpleasant. It causes a gag reflex in some, and anxiety for others. The impressions can be flawed, misplaced, or broken, creating the need for even more uncomfortable impressions.

The discomfort and anxiety caused by these impressions actually prevents many from getting the orthodontic care they need! This is why I’m so happy about new technology that uses pictures, instead of trays of goopy material to collect the images I need of my patients teeth.

Introducing iTero Digital Scanning Technology

There is new technology being used to avoid this aspect of orthodontics. It is the iTero digital scanning technology, and it uses digital imagery to capture up to 6,000 frames per second. The process results in a real-time 3D visualization of the scan.

The images are far more accurate than the goopy impressions can provide, and the process is much quicker and easier. Most importantly, my patients are much more comfortable and less stressed out about this most inconvenient aspect of orthodontic treatment.

The Advantages of iTero Technology

With digital scanning technology, my patients have a much easier time at the orthodontist. I no longer have to take a tray of goopy material, stretch their mouths wide open, and manipulate the trays as far into the recesses of my patient’s mouths as possible. Often this resulted in their gagging and coughing. The fear and dread of this procedure prevented many people from getting the orthodontic care they needed.

The result of this cleaner, quicker, easier process is a much better treatment plan. The images are clearer and more accurate than the impressions ever were. And as an added bonus, you can see them too. As we wave the wand around your mouth and teeth, the image appears right before your eyes! I think it is great when my patients get to be an active participant in their orthodontic treatment.

These images ensure a cleaner, sharper perspective of the patient’s teeth. As a result the treatment plan is more solid and guaranteed. Invisalign aligners, for example, will fit better. The accuracy and detail of the iTero technology is cutting edge and very exciting. It improves not just the process of getting orthodontics started, but the end result as well.

A Unique Approach to Sleep Apnea

Man snoring loudly as partner blocks her ears at home in bedroom

Sleep apnea is a condition which causes difficulties in breathing during sleep. The sufferer can wake up several times during the night, sometimes 30 times an hour without knowing it, and the condition is often accompanied by snoring.

I like to look at the big picture in my sleep apnea cases. As with any health problem, each case is different.  I believe that different treatments work for different people, and I’m excited about some new options available, like the Fotona laser.

Sleep Apnea Can Be Dangerous

Sleep apnea can be dangerous for your health. The patient isn’t usually aware of these disruptions, as they happen so quickly. They lead to drowsiness during the day, and other life interruptions caused by constant fatigue. Waking up several hundred times a night can cause your blood pressure to rise, which can lead to more serious consequences, such as heart attack or stroke.

It is unhealthy to have your breathing interrupted like this, snoring can be difficult for a household, and the repercussions of this can cause many undesirable consequences to your lifestyle and health. Fortunately there are a number of treatment options available for sleep apnea.

Treatment Options for Sleep Apnea

The most commonly known treatment option for sleep apnea is the CPAP machine. It is a mask and apparatus that you wear while you sleep. It works by increasing the air pressure in your throat so that the airway doesn’t collapse upon exhaling, which is what causes the snoring.

CPAP machines can be quite effective for snoring and sleep apnea. Some people find the apparatus cumbersome and noisy, and it may difficult to fall asleep with the mask and machine attached. For light sleepers, this solution may not be a solution at all, but more of a hindrance. They can be very effective for those who can adjust to them however.

Another treatment option is a fitted mouthpiece, also to be worn during sleep. They work by repositioning the jaw or tongue so that the airway is not obstructed. These can be effective also. They may be more desirable than the mask, hose, and machine that a CPAP consists of, and may be sufficient for some cases.

A newer approach to treating sleep apnea is the Fotona laser. This is a non-surgical “rejuvenating” laser, which tightens the tissue in the palate by enhancing collagen. This widens out the airway, lessening the source of the airway obstruction.

Which Option is Best For You

I like to look at each sleep apnea case individually. Every patient is different, with different lifestyles, and different consequences as a result of their sleep apnea. A treatment that works beautifully for one patient may not be desirable or effective for another. And every patient deserves the personalized and unique care that is necessary to improve the quality of their sleep and lives.

There is no reason to keep suffering with difficulties in sleeping! Snoring can be difficult for entire families, and so can constant fatigue, which leads to other health issues. If you have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, or think you may have a sleep apnea diagnosis, make an appointment with my office today. We offer free consultations to our first time visitors.

Invisalign vs. Braces, Which is best for you?

woman choice different brace on green background

Whether you choose Invisalign aligners or braces for your orthodontic needs, compliance is crucial to their effectiveness. Treatment will be quicker and more successful if you follow instructions, wear your elastics, eat the proper foods, and diligently attend your appointments.

It can be overwhelming trying to decide on the best method to align your teeth properly. Here are some tips and facts about braces and Invisalign aligners to help you weigh your options.

What to Expect When Wearing Braces

When you wear braces, you have a lot of hardware in your mouth. This means that you have to be more cautious and aware of the foods you eat. Sticky caramels, for instance, aren’t wise to eat with braces. The same goes for certain nuts and other hard foods. It is very important to brush often, and keep your mouth and braces clean and free of debris.

Braces are permanently attached, and they move all of your teeth at the same time. This leads to potential for more discomfort, as all of your teeth are simultaneously being coaxed into their proper alignment. Usually over the counter pain medicines, such as Advil or Tylenol are enough to alleviate this mild pain.

It is crucial to adhere to your orthodontists directions regarding your braces, and attend all of your appointments for adjustments. It is also important to wear your elastics. Your teeth are constantly moving around, and you want to make sure they’re moving in the right direction, and on schedule.

What to Expect When Wearing Invisalign Aligners

With Invisalign aligners there is less hardware in your mouth. Many people prefer the smooth appliances that make up Invisalign aligners, over having metal in their mouths. Invisalign aligners need to be worn for up to twenty two hours a day for the treatment to work. You don’t remove them, except to eat or drink any liquids besides water. In that regard, wearing Invisalign aligners requires more discipline than wearing braces.

Invisalign aligners can be fitted to move around one tooth at a time if necessary. This can mean less discomfort compared to braces, which move all of your teeth simultaneously. You still need to wear elastics with Invisalign aligners. It is important to wear them as directed by your orthodontist.

Invisalign aligners are virtually invisible, which may be desirable for teenagers or adults. They are fitted to your teeth, so there are no metal wires to irritate your mouth or gums. You can remove them in order to drink or eat, so in that sense they are more convenient.

Compliance is Crucial to Orthodontic Care

Compliance is crucial to the success of any orthodontic treatment. Braces may require more visits to the orthodontist, since there is more potential for loose wires or broken brackets. Invisalign aligners require more discipline by the wearer, since it is possible to remove them.

Staying hydrated, maintaining a healthy diet, and brushing regularly will help to ensure that your orthodontic treatment is successful, with Invisalign aligners or braces.

We specialize in Invisalign treatments, and we serve patients of all ages. With over twenty five years of experience, we are confident in our ability to assist you on your orthodontic journey. 4 Ways to Keep your Teeth Holiday Proof

Dr Greenberg Orthodontics | Blog | Holiday Tips

Dr Greenberg Orthodontics | Blog | Holiday Tips

Nut Crackers Exist for a Reason!

Those cute little bearded figurines aren’t just there to guard your mantle, they’re here to help you guard your teeth against tough nuts. No need to prove how macho your chompers are by shredding nutshells with them. Real nutcrackers are meant to do the job to help you avoid cracking teeth & damaging gums. If you see a tasty-looking bowl of nuts that haven’t been pre-shelled, find a nutcracker before digging in. This also goes for bottles & other packages, use the right tools for opening – not the ones in your mouth.

Yes to Carrots & Apples

Take after Rudolph & go for those carrots. This super strong veggie helps clean out your mouth & palate especially if you’re going in for seconds. The grainy texture of apples does the same & provides a refreshing taste. Your teeth will thank you!  Holidays are like the Olympics for our mouths, so it’s our job to stay on top of our oral health in order to eat like champs. Staying hydrated is also very important. If this season’s drinks get too sweet for you, water + fluoride helps keep your teeth strong & healthy…don’t have fluoride lying around your house? Just drink some water and stay away from the sugar for a while!

Extra Sticky = Icky

Keep your mouth pain-free & your dental fixtures safe by steering clear of extra sticky holiday foods. Things like taffy candy or dried cranberries force your teeth & jaws to work overtime. Sticky foods also tend to get rrreeeal comfy in your mouth, thus residing in there longer. We know they’re yummy… But letting a chewy candy dislodge a wire is never fun! We love seeing our patients, but prefer you avoid emergency care & maintain oral safety over the holidays by avoiding sticky candies.

Sugar Free Chewing Gum

As much as everyone says gum is bad for you, it’s not the case if it’s sugar free! As long as it doesn’t become a bad habit, sugar-free chewing gum actually fights against tooth decay. Especially on holidays & big family gatherings that make way for extra heavy meals, our mouths are going to need extra protection. The beauty of sugar-free chewing gum is that it stimulates more saliva to assist in flushing out bacteria. It also hunts & traps food particles that would otherwise build up & become plaque. Make the most of its benefit with 20 minutes of chewing after each holiday meal.

When is the best time to see an Orthodontic Specialist?

When to see a Specialist by Dr Vickie Greenberg Blog

When to see a Specialist by Dr Vickie Greenberg Blog

How do You Know When to see a Specialist?

We recommend getting a check up with an orthodontic specialist at the first sign of jaw pain, tenderness, or bite problems. If you have issues with your jaw or bite and your general dentist or current orthodontist says that surgery is the only way, get a second opinion with Vickie Greenberg. A quick visit & you may find out that your case can be treated without being put under! Dr. Greenberg is an expert in severe orthodontic cases and our practice is actually famous for our non-surgical & non-extraction techniques. Of course, if your child is experiencing jaw problems & trouble with their bite, see a specialist as soon as possible. Don’t wait for it to get worse as the child develops; the earlier you deal with it, the better results you can expect. Every orthodontist is different and sometimes surgery is the only way, but it’s crucial that you check off all other options before undergoing surgery!

What is Your Two-Phase Treatment?

The Two-Phase Treatment starts with developing the patient’s jaw size in order to accommodate all of the permanent teeth & to relate the upper & lower jaws to each other. Children sometimes exhibit early signs of jaw problems as they grow & develop. An upper & lower jaw that is growing too much or not enough can be recognized at an early age. If children around age 6 are found to have this jaw discrepancy, they are candidates for early orthodontic treatment. The First Phase of treatment consists of developing the jaw to accommodate all of the teeth. The Second Phase involves making sure each tooth has an exact location in the mouth where it is in harmony with the lips, cheeks, tongue, and other teeth. When this equilibrium is established, the teeth will function together properly.

Early Orthodontic Treatment: Planning Now Can Save Your Smile Later!

Because they are growing rapidly, children can benefit enormously from an early phase of orthodontic treatment utilizing appliances that direct the growth relationship of the upper & lower jaws. Thus, a good foundation can be established, providing adequate room for eruption of all permanent teeth. This early correction may prevent later removal of permanent teeth to correct overcrowding and/or surgical procedures to align the upper & lower jaws. Leaving such a condition untreated until all permanent teeth erupt could result in a jaw discrepancy too severe to achieve an ideal result with braces.
