What is Invisalign?

Although you may be familiar with the concept of orthodontics, or straightening teeth, the first image that usually comes to mind is a mouth filled with metal braces. However, thanks to new advances in technology, there are non-invasive, less painful ways to straighten crooked teeth.

That’s where Invisalign comes in. This discreet treatment not only makes it virtually impossible for someone to know you’re undergoing teeth straightening, it can also be used to correct almost every kind of issue that metal and ceramic braces do. Basically, Invisalign is a treatment method that uses a series of clear, removable plastic pieces that align your teeth little by little. In a sense, they are custom made braces that are slowly adjusted to create just enough pressure to straighten your teeth. Best of all, they are uniquely fitted to your mouth and allow maximum comfort during the process.

Benefits of Invisalign

Because Invisalign is non-invasive and non-surgical, the process of getting and using them is not as labor-intensive. In fact, there is no need for follow-up appointments to tighten wires, and you are unlikely to develop any sores in your mouth as you would with traditional braces and the metal rubbing against the tissues of your mouth.

Instead, you don’t need to visit the dentist nearly as many times with Invisalign, minimizing the time you spend on appointments. Another huge benefit is that Invisalign pieces are removable. Traditional braces not only cause sores and calluses inside your mouth, they can also cause discoloration and buildup of plaque. And while you have wires braces on, you have to stay away from all kinds of foods that can damage them, including hard candy, apples, chips, popcorn, gum, and more. None of that is an issue with Invisalign, because you can just take out the plastic aligners while you’re eating, drinking, flossing, and brushing your teeth. And when they are on, they’re practically invisible. This is an added benefit because you can actually see your teeth becoming straighter over time.

Am I a Candidate for Invisalign?

The best candidates for Invisalign have teeth that do not line up correctly. However, if you have large gaps, rotated teeth, severely crooked teeth, or even neuromuscular problems with biting, then Invisalign may not adequately address these problems. To find out if you are eligible for Invisalign, come in for a free consultation. You can get an exam and discover right away if you’re a prime candidate for Invisalign. The Invisalign Process

During your time wearing Invisalign plastic aligners, you will follow a customized treatment plan that maps out exactly how your teeth will be shifted into the correct alignment. This involves a number of important steps, including the following:

  • Wear your Invisalign aligners every day for 20-22 hours.
  • Wear each aligner for at least two weeks.
  • Wear anywhere from 18 to 30+ aligners throughout your treatment plan.
  • Take out the aligners when eating, flossing, or brushing your teeth.
  • Wear a retainer after treatment to keep teeth from shifting.

This process allows Invisalign to shift your teeth a little at a time until your smile is perfectly aligned and your bite has been corrected. While there are some variations to this depending on your specific treatment, our Pasadena Invisalign clients can expect a version of these steps to follow once they begin.

Invisalign FAQ

How long do I have to wear Invisalign aligners?

This timeline changes for every patient, depending on what kind of changes need to be made and how severe the changes are. The average wearer has Invisalign on from a year to 18 months, but that may be longer.

How much does Invisalign cost?

This cost is dependent on how long you will be receiving treatment and how much straightening is needed, which informs how many aligners you will be getting during treatments. Fortunately, most dental insurance providers do cover Invisalign. If your insurance does not cover Invisalign or you simply do not have insurance, make sure to ask about financing and payment plans during your consultation.
