A Holistic Approach to Orthodontics

Dr. Greenberg believes that “less is best” when it comes to complex cases in orthodontic care. She avoids surgery whenever possible. In fact, she has successfully treated countless patients without surgery after being told by other orthodontists that surgery was necessary.

A holistic approach is used to carefully evaluate each patient’s case. Everyone has different needs and expectations regarding their health care, and Dr. Greenberg appreciates and values this. She understands the need to take into account each person’s entire lifestyle and what they hope to gain from orthodontic treatment-not just the state of their teeth.

Cutting Edge Technology

Dr. Greenberg recently acquired the i-Cat FLX, imaging technology for her practice which produces 3D images of the entire facial structure, from the outside in. She can use it to accurately diagnose the cause of any issues a patient may be having, from TMJ and jaw pain to sleep apnea and snoring.

What makes this equipment especially useful is the access it provides the patients. The imagess come up almost immediately, and Dr. Greenberg can show you what’s going on in the structures of your face and jaw, you don’t have to simply take her word for it.

The Fotona Laser is another piece of equipment that sets Dr. Greenberg apart from the rest. This laser is streamlined technology that provides better patient care with little to no discomfort, faster healing times, and more accurate results. It’s used for several purposes-teeth whitening, accelerated orthodontics, and even sleep apnea treatment.

Orthodontics is Not Just for Teeth

When one thinks of orthodontics there’s a tendency to picture crooked teeth and braces. This is definitely true, but Dr. Greenbergs practice covers so much more than that.

Excessive snoring or sleep apnea can affect not only your sleeping patterns, but your entire life. Good sleep is instrumental in a healthy lifestyle, and Dr. Greenberg specializes in non-invasive techniques for treating sleep apnea.

TMJ and jaw pain are another specialty of Dr. Greenbergs. She understands that living in pain is no way to live at all, and has focused much of her time training in dentofacial orthodontics which is used used to adjust misaligned jaws and poorly positioned bites, often the cause of TMJ symptoms.

If you’re suffering from sleep apnea or TMJ, and you want to avoid surgery or other invasive techniques to treat your condition, then Dr. Greenberg may be the right orthodontist for you.

If you’re in need of Invisalign treatment or braces, or you have been diagnosed with sleep apnea or TMJ, call our office today. The i-Cat FLX-Superior Imaging Equipment

One of the things that sets Dr. Vickie Greenberg apart from other Orthodontists is her superior technology. Dr. Geenberg specializes in non-invasive orthodontic techniques to treat everything from TMJ to Sleep Apnea, and the best technology makes that simpler and easier.

Her latest acquisition is the i-Cat FLX. It’s cutting-edge technology that helps to evaluate and diagnose even the most complicated cases with speed and efficiency. Read on to learn more about how this technology makes life easier for Dr. Greenberg’s patients!

Airway Orthodontics and The i-Cat FLX

Airway orthodontics is a subfield of orthodontic treatment that helps to improve the overall health of each patient, of any age group. It focuses on the body’s oxygen intake in connection with the structure of the facial structure, including the mouth, jaws, and teeth-hence the name, Airway Orthodontics.

The i-Cat FLX is imaging technology that produces 3D pictures of the entire mouth structure. Dr. Greenberg can see what’s going on behind the scenes in your mouth-from your teeth down to the structure of your jaw.

What’s really great about this technology is it makes it easier for you to see and understand what’s happening, during your initial exam up until the final day of treatment. You don’t have to just take your orthodontists word for it anymore!

Sleep Apnea and The i-Cat FLX

Sleep Apnea is commonly detected as a snoring problem. Problems with heavy snoring go far beyond keeping your partner up at night-although that can definitely be a problem! Snoring can affect your entire lifestyle. When you snore heavily, you’re not getting sufficient oxygen for restful productive sleep, which can lead to fatigue, lack of focus, and moodiness.

The i-Cat FLX can project images of not only your teeth and jaw, but your nasal passages all the way down to your throat. This advantage makes it easier to diagnose and treat Sleep Apnea more quickly and efficiently than ever before.

TMJ and The i-Cat FLX

TMJ, or Jaw Pain, is one of those things you don’t really understand until you’ve suffered through it yourself. TMJ can be a hindrance at best, and almost debilitating at its worst. It can hinder your ability to eat, and the pain can be distracting and make life difficult to manage.

TMJ and Jaw Pain can be caused by countless factors, and the i-Cat FLX can detect these issues more efficiently and accurately than other imaging technology. The images are clear, precise and detailed, making it easier for Dr. Greenberg to create a specific treatment plan for your TMJ, sometimes instantly!

If you’re in need of Airway Orthodontics, then Dr. Vickie Greenberg is the care provider you’ve been looking for! She has over 25 years of experience in the orthodontic field, and she favors a holistic approach in her practice-she treats the whole patient, not just their mouths. She is compassionate, caring, and approachable-but her expertise and professionalism is second to none.

How Malocclusion (Overbite) Can Affect Your Whole Body

Malocclusion, or more commonly referred to as an Overbite is the faulty contact between the upper and lower teeth when the jaw is closed. Malocclusion can be viewed as crooked, crowded, or protruding teeth. It may affect a person’s appearance, speech, sleep and ability to eat. Malocclusions are most often inherited, but may be acquired with age or trauma.

What Causes Malocclusion? Is There Treatment?

Inherited conditions include too many or too few teeth, too much or too little space between teeth, irregular mouth and jaw size and shape, and atypical formations of the jaws and face, such as a cleft palate.

Malocclusions are sometimes symptom-less, but they can potentially cause pain from increased stress on the oral structures and entire body. Malocclusion may be remedied by orthodontic treatment; orthodontics is a specialty of dentistry that manages the growth and correction of dental and facial structures.

The Effects of Malocclusion on Your Body

Chiropractic care is a form of medicine concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, especially the spine.

Can a bad bite actually have a ripple effect across the entire body? Pasadena, CA orthodontist Dr. Vickie Greenberg says “YES!”

Dr. Greenberg shares the chiropractic view that the body is a neuromusculoskeletal kinematic chain. Posture has been found to have an effect on dental occlusion and vice versa. This is why Dr. Greenberg feels we can,

“Treat the bite to help the posture, and treat the posture to help the bite”.

Dr. Vickie Greenberg has been treating malocclusion for over 25 years and has been astounded at the positive outcomes her patients feel throughout their body when their bad bite is disrupted and resets correctly. Some patients write rave reviews that even after just 2 weeks their whole body feels better. Dr. Greenberg has a full tool chest to help her patients with malocclusion. Depending on the patient she will utilize dentofacial orthopedics for correcting the bite, Invisalign and braces for moving teeth, plus medical lasers for tissue bio stimulation.

Dr. Greenberg is happy to provide complimentary consultations and will use her ‘iCat FLX 3-D Cone Beam’ technology to provide a laser sharp diagnosis. It’s good for chiropractors to remember that living life with a bad bite is similar to walking around with a bad hip. We overcompensate for the weak side, and the spine reacts to carry the imbalanced load.

Some of the whole-body symptoms of malocclusion are trouble sleeping, ringing ears, migraine headaches, cluster headaches, sinuses plugged, and pain when eating. It’s extremely common for these patients to complain of neck ache and back ache.

Dr. Greenberg welcomes patients from around the world who travel to see her for expert care in Sleep Therapy, Sleep Apnea Treatment and TMJ Jaw Pain. Dr. Greenberg values referrals from Dentists, Doctors and Chiropractors for her to treat the entire patient and care deeply about holistic body wellness.

Using Orthodontics to treat TMJ or Jaw Pain

Jaw pain is the worst. It’s one of those things that you can’t truly understand until you’ve been through it. When your jaw is injured or damaged it makes things that you normally take for granted painful. Swallowing, chewing, even talking or taking a deep breath can be painful.

If you are suffering from jaw pain or TMJ, please call our office today. We use non-surgicaloptions for treating jaw pain, and we are here to help you.

What Causes Jaw Pain or TMJ?

TMJ stands for temporomandibular joints. These are the joints on either side of your head that make it possible for you to open and close your mouth. They come into action whenever you speak, chew, or swallow. They also control your lower jaw (mandible) as they move forward, backwards, and side to side.  These joints consist of not just your jaw bone, but muscles and ligaments as well.

Any problem that prevents this complex system of muscles, ligaments, discs and bones from working properly may result in a painful TMJ disorder most often described simply as Jaw Pain.

The most common causes of TMJ or Jaw Pain are dislocation, problems with the alignment of the teeth and jaw, stress resulting in teeth grinding, arthritis or injury. The resulting pain can be awful, almost debilitating.

There are treatment options available however, so if jaw pain or TMJ is hindering your lifestyle don’t despair.

How Does Dr. Vickie Greenberg Treat Jaw Pain or TMJ?

The most important thing to do before attempting to treat TMJ is to arrive at a proper diagnosis. Dr. Greenberg believes in the “less is best” approach to treatment, with the understanding that each patient is different and presents with their own unique set of symptoms and lifestyle.

This approach focuses on behavioral modifications such as eating softer foods, not chewing gum, and avoiding biting your nails. Since stress can be a factor, keeping aware of your stress levels and how you’re clenching your jaw is important as well. Using heat packs to alleviate the pain, and relaxation techniques to combat the tension in your jaw can be very helpful.

However, many cases of TMJ or jaw pain are much more severe, and require more intensive treatment. These cases may require fixing a jaw bite that is misaligned, or repositioning teeth that are causing an uneven bite. Dentofacial orthodontic devices may be recommended for treatment if it is deemed appropriate.

Dr. Greenberg believes firmly in treating the whole patient and not just their mouths. She understands that each case is different, and that every patient comes in with their own unique set of difficulties and hopes for treatment.

If you are struggling with jaw pain or TMJ, please don’t suffer another day! Dr. Vickie Greenberg uses her 20 years of experience, her compassion and empathy, and her every increasing expertise to diagnose each and every single one of her patients, and to design the best possible treatment plan. Please call our office today to schedule a consultation and get you back to being ashealthy and pain-free as possible!

The Benefits of Adult Orthodontics

Beautiful smiling girl wearing braces on a white background.

Not long ago we thought of orthodontics as something just for kids and teenagers. The word “orthodontics” conjured up images of big smiles full of metal and multi-colored rubber bands. The idea of adult braces was undesirable for some, and unacceptable for many.

Those days are over! More adults are getting orthodontic treatment every day, and it’s not just for aesthetics. Straight and even teeth provide much more than a great smile, they are crucial to your overall health and well-being.

With such options as Invisalign aligners, faster treatment programs, and ever evolving technology, orthodontics are becoming more mainstream and common for adults of all ages.

Preserving Your Teeth

When your teeth fit together properly they won’t literally work against themselves. Uneven teeth will grind against each other, causing unnecessary wear and tear to your teeth, which will have an impact on your oral health.

When your teeth fit together properly you won’t have those tiny chips that result from banging your teeth at odd angles. You will be able to chew your food more effectively, and therefore able to eat the foods you need for proper nutrition and overall health.

When your teeth are properly aligned and straight, you greatly increase your chances of keeping all of your own teeth for the rest of your life.

Orthodontics isn’t simply about having the perfect smile, it’s one of the best forms of preventative dentistry there is.

Keeping Your Gums Healthy

When you get older, your teeth start to crowd together. This makes it harder to clean in between them. Harmful bacteria will begin to settle in those hard to reach places, and this is not healthy for your gums or the rest of your body. Those harmful bacteria can enter into your bloodstream through your gums, causing other health risks and illnesses.

The health of your gums is a crucial element to your oral health. When your teeth are straight it is easier to keep your gums clean and healthy, because you can reach them better.

Treatment Options for Adults

Adults hesitate to seek out orthodontic treatment for various reasons. Some don’t like the idea of wearing braces, but now we have Invisalign aligners to offer. They are clear and virtually invisible, so you won’t have the chunky look and feel of metal braces.

Some people dread the process of being fitted for their orthodontic pieces. In the past you had to suffer through making molds of your mouth using goopy material.  The prospect of having trays of goo shoved into their mouths turns them off since this can cause a gag reflex, and sometimes anxiety. With the more modern iTero Technology we can avoid that. This technology uses digital imaging to create much better images of your mouth and teeth than the goopy stuff ever did!

Orthodontic care has become an easier and quicker process than it was in the past. There are sleeker less obvious devices to wear, and the process has become less cumbersome and uncomfortable.

If you think you could be in need or orthodontic care but you believe you’re too old…you’re not! We offer excellent orthodontic care to patients of all ages. We’re a top 1% Invisalign provider, and we carry some of the latest and best technology available.

Contact us today for a free consultation. It is never too late to seek out orthodontic care, and it will help ensure you to a happy smile and a healthy you!

The Importance of Compliance with Invisalign

Isolated invis aligner view from studio

One of the most satisfying and successful aspects of my orthodontic practice is the use of Invisalign aligners. I love this treatment option for straightening teeth because it is less intrusive than braces, and much more comfortable for my patients.

An important thing to be aware of when starting Invisalign treatment is that compliance is vital. You need to be committed to wearing your aligners for up to 23 hours a day. Braces are attached to your teeth, so you have no choice but to wear them. Invisalign aligners can be removed for eating, and it may be tempting to remove them at other times as well.

Why is Compliance Important?

Invisalign aligners come equipped as trays, fitted precisely for your mouth and teeth. They only work when they are properly placed in your mouth. It is important to wear them for up to 23 hours a day. They are only to be removed in order to eat or clean your teeth.

If you adhere to these guidelines, and make it to your appointments to keep track of your progress and get new trays, your treatment process will be successful at a faster rate. Not wearing your trays consistently can slow down the process.

Invisalign aligners are notably more comfortable than metal braces, but they do take some getting used to. Wearing them as often as you should from the start will help you adjust to them quicker, which will make them easier to wear, which will speed up the process!

Knowing this is an important first step when considering Invisalign aligners. If you feel that you have the discipline and dedication to adhere to these compliance rules, then Invisalign aligners may be the perfect solution for your orthodontic needs.

Tips for Maintaining Compliance

Be mentally prepared to commit to wearing your Invisalign aligners. When making the decision to commit to something, it is helpful to have a plan. Let your friends and family know about your treatment. They can help you be vigilant! Always remember to keep tissues or a designated container available, to store your aligners when you are eating.

Remember why you decided to get Invisalign aligners in the first place. The evenness of your teeth and bite won’t just improve your smile, but your overall health. When your teeth are straight, they won’t chip or break. You’ll be better equipped to eat the healthy foods you enjoy and need to maintain your energy level and lifestyle.

Your teeth will be easier to clean once they are straight and even. Your dentist appointments will be quicker and less of a hassle with straighter teeth. Your smile will be brighter, and your confidence will be higher!

The better you comply, and remember to look forward to the results of wearing the aligners, the quicker and more successful your treatment will be. It is a long term investment, and a worthy commitment to your health and life.

The Amazing Fotana Laser!

Fotona laser with white background

One of the best things about being in the orthodontics field is getting to utilize all of the latest and best technological advances!

Surgery is a daunting prospect, and it is gratifying to be able to offer my patients the opportunity to address certain orthodontic issues without the use of invasive surgical techniques. Fear of surgery prevents many people from receiving the care they need to ensure their oral and overall health. By offering non-invasive Fotona laser treatments, we can avoid surgery and improve the quality of our patient’s lives.

Fotona NightLase for Snoring and Sleep Apnea

Sleep Apnea is a condition which causes the sufferer to struggle with breathing during sleep. It can unknowingly wake you up several hundred times per night! And most notably it causes snoring. This can be disruptive to the snorer and their partners.

There are treatment options available for sleep apnea. The CPAP machine is the most well-known treatment. It is an apparatus that connects a breathing machine, through tubes, into the airway of the patient. It forces air into the lungs, which diminishes the sleep disruptions.

The machines can be loud and cumbersome though, and people often have trouble falling asleep while being hooked up to it.

Other options include custom made mouth guards, or surgery. The mouth guards can also hinder sleep, and people try to avoid invasive surgery, which can involve bleeding and scarring.

It is very exciting to offer the Fotana NightLase to my patients. It is a non-invasive option that can last for up to a year. The procedure is simple and effective, but still very gentle on the patient’s mouth.

The Fotona laser works by applying lasers to the soft tissues of the palate. This contracts the collagen, making for a firmer palate and therefore less obstruction in the airway.

The procedure is done 3 times over the course of six weeks. The affects last for up to a year, and the treatment can be repeated. It is safe, gentle, and highly effective. Best of all, it involves no invasive surgery, chemicals, or annoying breathing apparatus!

Fotona Laser for Tooth Whitening

Another exciting aspect of the Fotona laser is its ability to aid in tooth whitening procedures. It is the quickest, gentlest, and least invasive of teeth whitening options currently available.

It uses a unique wavelength (Er:YAG) that has a high absorption rate in water. This means the gel used for whitening your teeth does not heat up enough to cause damage to your tooth or the pulp.

The Fotona laser is extremely effective, minimally invasive, and causes no damage to your teeth, or the pulp of your teeth in the process of teeth whitening.

Cutting Edge Technology in our Office

We pride ourselves for being able to offer our patients non-invasive and painless treatment options for their orthodontic needs. We know that any surgery can be scary and painful, and many people avoid it altogether.

You deserve to have a healthy and functional mouth and smile! If you’re suffering with sleep apnea and snoring, and are hesitant to purchase a CPAP machine, or simply want a brighter whiter smile without any damage to your teeth, make an appointment with our office today!

We offer free consultations to our first time patients. I am Board Certified and have over 25 years of experience. My number one priority is providing successful treatments, with the maximum level of comfort possible to all of my patients.

iTero Technology for Your Orthodontic Care

iTero machine closeup with white background

One of the biggest hassles of orthodontic care has always been the impressions. A big wad of goopy substance shoved into your mouth can be highly unpleasant. It causes a gag reflex in some, and anxiety for others. The impressions can be flawed, misplaced, or broken, creating the need for even more uncomfortable impressions.

The discomfort and anxiety caused by these impressions actually prevents many from getting the orthodontic care they need! This is why I’m so happy about new technology that uses pictures, instead of trays of goopy material to collect the images I need of my patients teeth.

Introducing iTero Digital Scanning Technology

There is new technology being used to avoid this aspect of orthodontics. It is the iTero digital scanning technology, and it uses digital imagery to capture up to 6,000 frames per second. The process results in a real-time 3D visualization of the scan.

The images are far more accurate than the goopy impressions can provide, and the process is much quicker and easier. Most importantly, my patients are much more comfortable and less stressed out about this most inconvenient aspect of orthodontic treatment.

The Advantages of iTero Technology

With digital scanning technology, my patients have a much easier time at the orthodontist. I no longer have to take a tray of goopy material, stretch their mouths wide open, and manipulate the trays as far into the recesses of my patient’s mouths as possible. Often this resulted in their gagging and coughing. The fear and dread of this procedure prevented many people from getting the orthodontic care they needed.

The result of this cleaner, quicker, easier process is a much better treatment plan. The images are clearer and more accurate than the impressions ever were. And as an added bonus, you can see them too. As we wave the wand around your mouth and teeth, the image appears right before your eyes! I think it is great when my patients get to be an active participant in their orthodontic treatment.

These images ensure a cleaner, sharper perspective of the patient’s teeth. As a result the treatment plan is more solid and guaranteed. Invisalign aligners, for example, will fit better. The accuracy and detail of the iTero technology is cutting edge and very exciting. It improves not just the process of getting orthodontics started, but the end result as well.

Start Your Orthodontic Treatment Today

It is an exciting time to be looking into orthodontics! The procedures are much more streamlined and easier than they’ve ever been. The discomfort levels are lower, and the process is faster. The results are more predictable and successful.

If you are in need of orthodontic treatment, and you have been putting it off, don’t delay any longer. We offer free consultations to our first time patients. Make an appointment today and get on the road to a healthier, happier, more brightly smiling you. A Unique Approach to Sleep Apnea

Man snoring loudly as partner blocks her ears at home in bedroom

Sleep apnea is a condition which causes difficulties in breathing during sleep. The sufferer can wake up several times during the night, sometimes 30 times an hour without knowing it, and the condition is often accompanied by snoring.

I like to look at the big picture in my sleep apnea cases. As with any health problem, each case is different.  I believe that different treatments work for different people, and I’m excited about some new options available, like the Fotona laser.

Sleep Apnea Can Be Dangerous

Sleep apnea can be dangerous for your health. The patient isn’t usually aware of these disruptions, as they happen so quickly. They lead to drowsiness during the day, and other life interruptions caused by constant fatigue. Waking up several hundred times a night can cause your blood pressure to rise, which can lead to more serious consequences, such as heart attack or stroke.

It is unhealthy to have your breathing interrupted like this, snoring can be difficult for a household, and the repercussions of this can cause many undesirable consequences to your lifestyle and health. Fortunately there are a number of treatment options available for sleep apnea.

Treatment Options for Sleep Apnea

The most commonly known treatment option for sleep apnea is the CPAP machine. It is a mask and apparatus that you wear while you sleep. It works by increasing the air pressure in your throat so that the airway doesn’t collapse upon exhaling, which is what causes the snoring.

CPAP machines can be quite effective for snoring and sleep apnea. Some people find the apparatus cumbersome and noisy, and it may difficult to fall asleep with the mask and machine attached. For light sleepers, this solution may not be a solution at all, but more of a hindrance. They can be very effective for those who can adjust to them however.

Another treatment option is a fitted mouthpiece, also to be worn during sleep. They work by repositioning the jaw or tongue so that the airway is not obstructed. These can be effective also. They may be more desirable than the mask, hose, and machine that a CPAP consists of, and may be sufficient for some cases.

A newer approach to treating sleep apnea is the Fotona laser. This is a non-surgical “rejuvenating” laser, which tightens the tissue in the palate by enhancing collagen. This widens out the airway, lessening the source of the airway obstruction.

Which Option is Best For You

I like to look at each sleep apnea case individually. Every patient is different, with different lifestyles, and different consequences as a result of their sleep apnea. A treatment that works beautifully for one patient may not be desirable or effective for another. And every patient deserves the personalized and unique care that is necessary to improve the quality of their sleep and lives.

There is no reason to keep suffering with difficulties in sleeping! Snoring can be difficult for entire families, and so can constant fatigue, which leads to other health issues. If you have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, or think you may have a sleep apnea diagnosis, make an appointment with my office today. We offer free consultations to our first time visitors.
